San Jose Sharks Give Sam Dickinson Housing Letter - What It Means for NHL Future! (2025)

Sharks' Big Decision: Housing Letter for Dickinson - What's the Story?

A significant milestone for any young hockey player, but what does it mean for the future?

Sam Dickinson revealed to SHD that the San Jose Sharks delivered his housing letter, a momentous occasion in the world of hockey. But what exactly is this mysterious letter, and why is it so important?

The housing letter, as described by Mark Lazarus of The Athletic, is a formal notification mandated by the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) and presented on official team letterhead. It's a commitment, a promise, that the player will remain with the NHL team for the rest of the year, no more bouncing between leagues.

Elliotte Friedman, in his insightful 32 Thoughts podcast, elaborates, "It's a sign of stability. The player can now find a permanent home, and if they're sent down later, the team covers the costs."

And so, Dickinson, who has been residing in a hotel since his arrival in San Jose, can now seek a permanent residence. But here's where it gets controversial...

There's still a slim chance Dickinson could return to the London Knights. If that happens, as Friedman points out, the Sharks would be responsible for his housing expenses, even if he's not living in San Jose.

With that in mind, it's highly unlikely the San Jose Sharks will send Dickinson back to the OHL.

Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky agrees, "Dickinson has earned his spot. He played a solid game recently, and he deserves to be here."

Dickinson's journey is intertwined with that of fellow top prospect Michael Misa. Misa, who has only played seven games so far, is currently living with Tyler Toffoli. The Sharks have the option to send Misa back to the OHL without burning a year of his ELC (Entry-Level Contract), a decision that will be made soon.

Dickinson and Misa have shared a unique rookie season experience, supporting each other through the ups and downs. Dickinson recalls, "Misa reached out to me right away when he heard about my 10th career game. We're in this together, and it's great to have that support."

As the Sharks prepare for their next game against the Kraken in Seattle, Dickinson reflects on his journey and looks forward to cheering on Misa.

So, what's your take on the housing letter and its impact on young players' careers? Is it a sign of commitment or a controversial expense? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
